Oh Boy! Whoopi Goldberg Launches a ‘Women Only’ Sports Channel – What Could Go Wrong?

In 2024, “The View’s” Whoopi Goldberg is best known for her gravelly voice and making stupid statements. She used to be associated with some decent performances in movies like “Ghost” and “Sister Act.” She gave up that career of reading lines to think and speak on her own. Maybe that was a bad idea. It hasn’t always worked to her advantage.

It wasn’t long ago that she put her foot in her mouth about the causes of the Holocaust. And, in November, Whoopi told her audience that a Staten Island bakery wouldn’t “bake her cake” because she’s Whoopi. She chalked it up to politics. It took about 12 seconds for the bakery to dispute that accusation with facts. The bakery’s ovens were down. Maybe Whoopi should have stuck reading other people’s thoughts. Or maybe not.

Indeed, 2024 has been a busy year for Goldberg. She launched her own line of dope called  Emma & Clyde – named after her mom and brother.

“Cannabis is probably the greatest medicine on the planet that everybody can have.”

“For people like me, it was always used to stop the [menstrual] cramps – and the side hustle of that is that it was fun, it made you laugh and stuff,” she adds.

She has now added to her stable of ventures the launch of a TV “Network“—an all-women’s sports channel.

“We want it all. And the great thing is, because we’re not just American-based, we can go after things that aren’t being shown. That’s what I’m hoping for. I’m hoping to be the place where, you know, you’re going to see not just women.

Whoopi Goldberg launches new All Women’s Sports Network | Watch

The Network is called All Women’s Sports Network (AWSN). Catchy.

I went to the webpage. It’s not exactly high-tech. The page has the look and feel of a high school streaming webpage. Although she claims that the network is carried in 65 countries (and maybe that is true). I keep thinking of that tree in the woods — when it falls, will it make a sound if no one is there? Of course, the tree will make a noise. AWSN will broadcast sports, and no one will care. Who is going to carve out time to watch women’s field hockey?  If no one is watching, how long will it last?

The reality is Whoopi’s project is doomed. The major women’s sports are under contract to the “big boys.” AWSN cannot cover or broadcast the World Cup, WNBA, LPGA, or the tennis circuit, so what is left? When I clicked on the site, there was a women’s beach volleyball match. Who was playing? I don’t know. It was in a park. It looked like the only people at the match were officials and a handful of “fans.” Ok I admit, I watched for a while. Then I got bored. I am guessing most people will have the same reaction. So where’s the revenue going to come from?

The bottom line is if there is a market for a sport, even if it is women, it will find an outlet, and the “Big Boys” will buy the rights and pick it up. Unless you’re related to the ladies playing field hockey, the chances are a “sports fan” will find something else to watch — like a rerun of… anything else.

This below is a comment from a reader. Frankly, he has a point.

Here’s a prediction: the ONLY successful broadcasts (if any) will be the events in which good-looking, scantily clad women participate.  Which demographic consumes sports the most?  Men.  What do they enjoy about sports?  High level of competition and skill.  There is no good reason to watch female sports for men when women perform WORSE than men.  It’s just not fun to watch UNLESS the women happen to be gorgeous

Whoopi said that she wants to bring back and broadcast “Roller Derby.” Well, ok, but it will only get eyes on the product if the players are uniformed in bikinis and they are all “gorgeous.” And my suggestion – it is played like the movie “Rollerball”.

I’m kidding, of course. But not about the uniforms.

While speaking to the CNN host, Whoopi dropped an unintentional truth bomb when she said of “sports”:

“It should be the best sports person out there.”

Yeah, Whoopi – we know. Maybe she started this channel so something else will have lower viewership than “The View.”
