Former Vice President Dick Cheney announced Friday that hewill definitely not be voting for former President Donald Trump in November. In a statement datelined “McLean, Virginia,” not Texas or Wyoming, the former vice-president cast Trump as an existential threat to the Republic.

The announcement was teased earlier Friday by former Wyoming Congresswoman and seemingly former Republican Liz Cheney as she was campaigning for Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s opponent, Democrat Colin Allred, when she said, “Dick Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris.” Liz Cheney endorsed Harris on Wednesday.

With This Presidential Endorsement, Liz Cheney Places the Final Nail in Her Political Coffin – RedState

I’m not sure the last time a former president or vice president endorsed the nominee of another party, so while the event may be singular, it is hardly historic. Neither Cheney nor former President George W. Bush has been supportive of Trump, though Cheney did endorse Trump in 2016. He was not invited to the last two RNC conventions.

The endorsement symbolizes a clean break between the zombie-like husk of a political party staggering along in the wake of George W. Bush’s presidency and whatever it is the GOP is trying to become. Over 200 former Bush, McCain, and Romney acolytes have endorsed Harris; see Bush, McCain, and Romney Aides Made a Move in Presidential Race That Didn’t Get Reaction They Hoped. An obscure child of John McCain was trotted out to change his party registration and announce his fealty to Kamala.

In short, the establishment wing of the GOP knows that if Trump wins, the grift is over. They are panicked. And they will do anything, including looking stupidly opportunist, to stop that from happening.
