Harvard Professor of Law Emeritus Alan Dershowitz has proven to be a wealth of (often but not always) solid commentary and analysis in recent years, as he is one of the few on the left side of the political aisle who’s been willing to point out that much of the endless Democrat lawfare against Donald Trump has been a banana republic style of justice and runs counter to our Constitution.
He’s also been a lifelong Democrat, which has been head-scratching to me. I sometimes wish I could ask, “How can you be a lifelong Democrat—did you hear what you yourself just said?”
But even Dershowitz has come to the obvious realization: this is not the Democrat Party of old; no, the modern version is a shrill, extremist version that wants to fundamentally transform America into some weird socialist utopia that it was never meant to be. He announced in August on the “Talkline With Zev Brenner Podcast” that he’s had enough in a clip that was re-posted Thursday evening and has gone viral on social media.
He’s no longer a Democrat:
It was a stunning conversation where Dershowitz said he was appalled by the antics of the pro-Hamas crowd at the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago in August:
DERSHOWITZ: [People were …] standing outside the convention center and screaming, “Hamas will win!” Screaming, “We are all Hamas!” Screaming, “There was nothing wrong with October 7th.”
“What’s wrong with October 7th?” somebody said. No, there aren’t fine people and they don’t make fine points, and so I was disgusted at the Democratic National Convention– absolutely disgusted.
But here’s where he revealed that he’s done with the extremists:
INTERVIEWER: …Are you ready to leave the Democratic Party?
DERSHOWITZ: I am no longer a Democrat. I am an independent. I’ll decide who to vote for at the last minute based on totality of the circumstances. I want to see how they deal with Iran, I want to see how they deal if Iran attacks the United States, I want to encourage the current administration to support Israel, so I’m not revealing my vote until, you know, maybe November 1st.
I need to hear all the information, all the evidence. But I am no longer member of the Democratic Party.

Interestingly, the professor revealed that his decision wasn’t spur of the moment—it’s been brewing for a long time.
INTERVIEWER: And when did when did you resign the Democratic Party?
DERSHOWITZ: Well, gradually over time. I think a lot of things pushed me in that direction. Kamala Harris’ failure to comply with their constitutional obligation to preside over the Senate and the House Joint Sessions for Netanyahu pushed me a lot over that. And what Joe Biden said pushed me over that. But I think the thing that really pushed me is how the Democrats conducted their convention.
I cannot be associated with the party that features as its speakers, AOC, Sharpton, Liz Warren and Bernie Sanders, that’s not my party.
This is an interesting development and can’t be a good sign for Kamala Harris and the Democrats when long-time stalwarts are ripping the party for having let itself be taken over by radicals. That being said, I can’t understand how he can say all this but then add that he’s not sure who he’s voting for. If you vote for Harris, you’re voting for at least four more years of anti-Israel policy, socialist reforms, and generally the further degradation of America.
I hope Professor Dershowitz’s recognition of reality continues apace and that come November, there is no doubt left in his mind about the existential dangers of today’s Democrats. He should vote accordingly.
