When I reported on the shooting of a police officer near an ICE facility in Alvarado, Texas on the Fourth of July, I wondered: “What were these violent activists planning? Why were they wearing body armor and masks?”
Thankfully, despite being hit in the neck, the officer survived and was released from the hospital.
I wondered what they were up to because it certainly appeared as if this armed group had more sinister plans than the lone shooting—as bad as that was—because they were heavily armed, with some wearing body armor and others covered in mud. They had goggles and masks and fliers reading: “Resist fascism,” “fight oligarchy, and “fight ICE terror.”
It sure looked like they were looking for big trouble, and according to Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy Larson, that’s exactly the case:
“It was a planned ambush with the intent to kill ICE corrections officers,” Larson said at the Monday briefing. “Make no mistake, this was not a peaceful protest. It was indeed an ambush.”
The whole thing was a setup, and things could have turned out much worse if their plot to kill multiple officers had come to fruition:
Federal officials described the encounter as an ‘organized ambush’ carried out by armed individuals dressed in black military-like clothing who reportedly first detonated fireworks outside the federal facility.
Like the sick Coeur d’Alene, Idaho assassin who purposely lured firefighters to a blaze he’d set, only to shoot at them and tragically murder two, these unidentified zealots baited law enforcement there with the fireworks:
The sound led two unarmed ICE facility employees to walk outside the facility on Sunflower Lane, where they reportedly encountered people with flashlights who were using spray paint to vandalize the building and vehicles with phrases including Traitor and ICE Pig.
An Alvarado police officer also responded to reports of suspicious activity only to be met with gunfire by an assailant, according to police.
Larson did not identify the assailants but said 10 individuals will face federal charges—including attempted murder of a federal officer. It’s hardly the only recent violence around the country directed at ICE:

Lawson added that the ten, plus one co-conspirator, all face possible long prison sentences. Good. Make them longer.
