William Barr, the former Attorney General, attacked his boss, former President Donald Trump. He highlighted its political undertones.
Barr claimed that it was hard to not conclude that the suit, announced Wednesday morning by New York Attorney General Letitia James is a “political hitjob” and criticized James for “gross excess” in dragging Trump’s children into her suit. She also hypothesized that the legal tiff against her will backfire.
Barr said to Fox News that it was difficult for her not to conclude that the incident is a political hitjob. Barr said that she isn’t sure if Trump has a case against her. What convinces me most that this is a political hit is her attempt to drag the children into it.
James revealed a $250 million civil suit against Trump, his three adult children, and the Trump Organization’s management. The lawsuit alleges they engaged in fraudulent and deceptive business practices.
She claimed that Trump had manipulated asset valuations to maximize tax and business benefits. She also cited a number of financial documents and appraisals in her 200-plus page lawsuit. She is seeking to ban Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Ivanka Trump, and Donald Trump Jr., from being an officer or directors in any New York corporation or similar entity.
Barr said, “Yes, they played roles in the business.” But this was his personal financial report. It was prepared and approved by the CFO. Accounting firms were also involved. The children won’t know all the details, and they are not expected to do their due diligence in real life.
Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump tweeted clips of James’s past comments, in which she pledged to be a “real pain in the ass” to him. Trump also called the suit a “witch hunt.” James pointed out that she has not been disqualified by the courts from investigating Trump, despite previous remarks.
James began her investigation into Trump Organization in 2019, after Michael Cohen, a former Trump lawyer, testified before Congress that Trump’s business empire was involved in fraudulent activity. She claims she has found evidence of criminal activity and has referred it to the IRS as well as the Southern District of New York.
“I believe it is going to backfire on them because it will make people sympathize with Trump,” Barr said, This is yet another example of Trump derangement syndrome-related people accumulating.”
Barr famously had a falling out with Trump during the waning days of his turbulent tenure atop the Justice Department, which he departed in December 2020. Barr and Trump were vehemently at odds over the former president’s insistence that the election was “stolen” from him — assertions Barr called “bullshit.”
Barr, who resigned from Trump’s administration in 2016, has been open about his opinions on Trump and urged the GOP to pick someone other than his ex-boss to be their party standard bearer in 2024. He has also defended Trump on numerous occasions.
