Just the News reports that Liz Truss, Britain’s new Prime Minster, isn’t wasting any time in governing the country. Truss spoke to Parliament on Thursday and stated that she would continue to implement a plan to restore fracking in the North Sea, with the goal of making the UK an energy exporter by 2040. Truss also stated that she will not accept the opposition’s request to impose a windfall tax upon energy companies. This would, according to Truss, undermine investments necessary to secure domestic energy supplies. She stated that her approach would be pro-growth and pro-business.
Truss stated that she is aware that many people are having trouble paying their energy bills. She wanted to assure them that it would be possible to afford energy. Although she stated that she was committed to net zero, she clearly recognizes that it is still a long way off. For two years, she has also set a cap on household power bills at $2,888 (the U.S equivalent). Truss plans to develop natural gas and nuclear power.
Here’s a video of the appearance of the PM. Congress is so much more interesting than Parliament.
Back at home, Democrats are preparing to protest an oil permit reform deal that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-W.Va.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made for Sen. Joe Manchin. It’s a shame that Manchin gave in, but the bill is still a nightmare. Any energy produced in the U.S. would be better than none. It is notable that the West has not received any assistance in obtaining energy from states with untapped oil and gas resources. Many of these cases are on federal land. These resources will not be used to create thousands of jobs.
A minimum of 70 House Democrats wrote a letter opposing the move. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), meanwhile, criticized the agreement as a “giveaway” to the fossil fuels sector. I have written previously about climate celebrities who are not afraid to spew carbon for their personal travel. California Governor. Gavin Newsom is moving as quickly as he can to remove all internal combustion engine vehicles and replace them with EVs in a state where the status of the energy grid is six-to-five-and-pick-’em these days.
Our leaders, unlike Truss, hide behind fear-mongering to boost the media profile a cranky teenager as well as other young people who have never been required to pay a household budget. While they continue to line their pockets through crony capitalism while trying to calm their consciences about their seven-figure incomes,
Truss, unlike our leaders, seems to recognize that her country’s needs come first and is willing to work with us to solve this problem. She is at least aware that people in the UK require heat and light, as well as transportation and affordable goods. It may not be the best solution. There might be details to work out and there might be a need to debate the profits made by energy companies. Although oil and gas companies make profits, it is still better than having your electric company shut off your air conditioner in the heatwave or telling you that your EV cannot be charged.
While wind and solar are wonderful ideas, we’re not yet at the point where they can replace fossil-fuelled fuels. The only way to make the population accept them is to force them into submission. This will only increase the gap between the Washington elite and their hangers-on and the rest of the country. Liz Truss gets it. Our Democrats do not.
