Tomorrow—January 6, 2025—Vice President Kamala Harris will have the humiliating task of certifying Donald Trump’s presidential election win. This is the same man she called a fascist and demonized as an existential threat to our nation–and even to the entire world.
Talk about awkward.
Adding to the moment is the fact that it will be January 6, a date that haunts folks like former Reps. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) and Liz Cheney (R-WY) because, to them, it represents the worst, most heinous, most evil attack on the United States in our history.
She’ll join a small club of previous VPs who had to publicly confirm their failure:
Under the Constitution, the vice president is the head of the Senate, entrusted with the process of declaring the result of a White House election…
And it means Harris, who lost all seven key battleground states to a candidate she called a fascist, must face the final humiliation of declaring Donald Trump the victor.
She will follow in the footsteps of Al Gore, vice president to Bill Clinton, who had to certify his defeat to Republican George W. Bush in 2001 after weeks of legal wrangling about hanging chads and small margins in Florida.
Before him, Richard Nixon (then vice president to Dwight D. Eisenhower) had to sign off on the results of his loss to John F. Kennedy after the 1960 election.
Ah, remember Al Bore Gore, the original election denier:
Here’s Nixon in 1961:
But wait—things could get even more interesting. Kamala could simply not show up. It’s happened before:
In 1969, Democratic Vice President Hubert Humphrey recused himself and skipped certification. Instead it fell to the Senate president pro tempore (usually the majority party’s most senior member) to announce that Humphrey had lost to Nixon’s second run.
On Friday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked if Harris would show up and said, “I believe that’s her plan. I would have to refer you to the vice president’s office on her schedule.” Now, there’s a statement that leaves plenty of wiggle room. KJP is known for repeatedly misleading the public, so it’s hard to put much credence in her words.

Trump fans are of course having fun with it on social media.
Normally, I oppose gloating—I believe it’s in bad form. Accept your victories with class and show grace to your opponent.
In this case, however, I am having trouble finding grace toward Biden, Harris, Schumer, Pelosi et al. They ran such a vicious, mendacious campaign, and have done so much to harm America that it’s going to be hard not to enjoy the schadenfreude of watching Kamala declare Trump—the fascist Nazi whose supporters are “garbage”—as the president of the United States.
That is, if she shows up.
