President Donald Trump sat down with NBC News anchor Kristen Welker on Sunday, and Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) ended up on the topic list. That came amid a discussion on who is currently leading the Democratic Party, a question that doesn’t currently have a good answer.
Is it Kamala Harris, who gave a laughably bad comeback speech on Wednesday? Or is it Cory Booker, who made headlines for a filibuster against nothing that no normal person paid attention to? Maybe it’s Hakeem Jeffries, or as I like to call him, “TEMU Obama.”
Then there’s Crockett, who has been doing everything she can to up her profile over the last several months. That’s included interviews, late-night appearances, and now commencement addresses.

TRUMP: I can’t, I can’t name one Democrat. I mean, I look at the Democrats, they’re in total disarray. They have a new person named Crockett. I watched her speak the other day, and she’s definitely a low-IQ person, and they said she’s the future of the party.
Trump’s words caused an expected outcry, with accusations of racism being hurled at him.
I must have missed the mention of Crockett’s race in the president’s statement. Are Democrats saying that having a low IQ correlates with skin color? Because that in and of itself would be a far better example of racism than Trump not mentioning race while criticizing someone. Besides, we all know he’d call someone who was purple low IQ if he didn’t like them. There’s nothing novel going on there.
Of course, the real question is whether Trump is right. Enter Crockett’s latest public appearance, delivering the commencement address at Tougaloo College on Sunday in Jackson, MS. Listen to this clip and tell me whether you believe it’s “low IQ” or not.
CROCKETT: There are going to be people that tell you that you don’t belong, and I am here to tell you ova and ova and ova that you absolutely belong. There are people that are going to tell you that there is not a table in which there is a seat for you, but I am here to remind you of Montgomery and those folded chairs. Let me tell you that we know how to use a chair, whether we pullin’ it up or doin somethin’ else with it. Let me hear the, let me be the first one to tell you that I know that y’all are ready to put your boots on the ground.
(Awkward silence)
That’s your cue.
(Music plays)
Well, that’s good to hear. And here I was, worried that Crockett might not know how to use a chair. No more elegant words have been spoken by a politician in my lifetime. And was her mention of doing “somethin’ else with” the chair another one of her subtle nods to violence? Some on the right thought so, but I think it’s more likely she just flubbed the delivery of her supposedly banger line so badly that she couldn’t figure out what to say.
CROCKETT: Instead of publicly calling us the n-word, they use racist epithets and suggest that we’re ghetto or unqualified or diversity hires even though we’re all more, often times than not, more educated and qualified than they are. I have news for you. These attacks are not new because Jim Crow never died. He just lied and wait.
It’s sad that some people feel the need to constantly stir up division and hatred like this. Crockett isn’t a smart person, but she’s sentient enough to understand what she’s doing. Giving a commencement address before a class of college graduates is not a place to preach oppression and play the victim. It’s a place to offer inspiration and a positive outlook. Instead, we get mentions of Jim Crow and claims that not agreeing with discriminatory hiring practices is the same as using a racial slur. One might call that a very low-IQ argument.
Crockett did go on to lash out at Trump on Sunday, claiming his attack was proof he’s “terrified of smart, bold Black women.”
Again, everything always comes back to race with her, but she’s right that Trump has been saying her name quite a bit lately. That’s purposeful. He recognizes she’s politically toxic and wants to elevate her. Luckily, Crockett is so ambitious that she’s happy to play along, and that’s a bad thing for the Democratic Party.
