Police said that 33 people were shot in Chicago, including one fatally, during the weekend.
Over three hours Sunday morning, seven people were killed in Chicago. Four people were also injured in an attack on River North.
The shooting took place in the 400 block of North State Street at 1:01 a.m., the same block in which two men were injured in a drive-by shooting two weeks ago.
The 18th police area, where murders have increased 100% and shootings have increased 53% since last year, was the scene of the downtown shootings. The crime rate is 71%, which includes burglaries, thefts, and sexual assaults, as well as motor vehicle thefts.
According to police, Sunday’s River North shooting saw a witness tell police that a white sedan shot at three people while they were heading south on State Street. The incident resulted in the deaths of two men and one woman. A 29-year-old man was injured in the neck, jaw, and chest. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. A 40-year-old woman was also shot in the leg. A 41-year-old man sustained a graze wound in his leg. The 27-year-old victim was then taken to Stroger Hospital in good health.
Police said that a woman was shot while standing next to her car at 600 Block West Scott Street, on the Near North Side. It happened about half an hour later. The 24-year-old woman sustained a graze to her neck and was transported in good health to Northwestern.
Police said that two men were shot and killed in the block of West Elm Street, near the North Side at 4:25 AM. A man aged 37 was transported to Northwestern in serious condition, while a man aged 39 was admitted to the hospital in fair health.
None of the downtown attacks were committed by anyone in custody.
At least 16 people were shot in the city on Sunday night, including a girl aged 17 who was seriously injured in the Garfield Park neighborhood, West Side. These attacks did not result in anyone being taken into custody.
Saturday:
Police said that two people were shot in South Austin, one of them fatally, on Saturday night. A 31-year-old man was injured in his face and was taken to Mt. Sinai, where he died. A second man, aged between 25 and 30 years, was wounded in the leg, arm, and torso by a gunshot and was taken to Mt. Sinai, where he remains in serious condition. Initial investigation revealed that there may have been an exchange of gunfire between the two men. Area Four detectives are currently investigating the incident.
According to the Chicago Fire Department, an off-duty Chicago officer was killed in Beverly, on the Far South Side, during an altercation. CFD reported that the shooting took place near Artesian and 104th at about 2:30 AM. Chicago Police Department did not confirm that an officer was involved, but they said that a 31-year-old man was shot in his back. CFD reports that he was taken to Christ Medical Center Oak Lawn. CPD lists the victim as being in fair condition. Nobody is currently in custody.
We reported previously that at least 71 people were killed in Chicago’s shooting rampage over the Fourth of July weekend. Eight of these deaths were caused by gunfire. The 71 shooting victims do not include the many people who were injured or killed in the attack on Chicago’s Highland Park suburb.
According to the Sun-Times, 331 people were killed in Chicago from January 1, 2022, through July 10, 2022.
