The entire staff of the Kenly Police Department resigned Wednesday afternoon after officers did not want to be a part of the work environment that was created, the town’s former chief of police said.

Chief Josh Gibson stated that he and four officers had submitted a two-week resignation notice on Wednesday at 4:50 pm.

Gibson stated that Christy Jones, Utilities Clerk, and Sharon Evans, Assistant Town Manager, both resigned.

Gibson stated, “All of us were very heartbroken that this had to happen,”

He stated that officers couldn’t perform their duties because of the environment created by Justine Jones, the town manager.

Gibson didn’t elaborate on the work environment because Gibson is now surrounded by lawyers.

Gibson stated that Jones was appointed town manager in June.

The town manager stated that if an emergency meeting is required, the notice must be given 48 hours in advance.

Sandra Walston stated that she is concerned about the future of the police department.

“He’s done a good job for our town, I’m a retired teacher from the area I remember seeing him in the schools, and it’s just a little bit of shock,” she said.

Reginald Williams said he hopes the town figures out a solution soon.

“I was like what in the world man, we can’t have a lawless town,” he said. “There’s no way on God’s green earth we can have a lawless town, so I hope we can find a resolution sooner rather than later.”

Gibson served as the chief of the police department for the majority of 21 years.

We reached out to Kenly, and are still waiting for a response. A spokesperson for Johnston County Sheriff’s Office stated that there is no plan for increased patrols in the area. However, they will be available to respond to any Kenly resident who requires them. We reached out to Wilson County Sheriff’s Office as well and are still waiting for their response.
