Brittney Griner of the WNBA, who has been held in Russia on drug charges for the past two months, may be allowed to return to the United States. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Wednesday that the Biden administration had made a “substantial proposition” for her return, which includes American Paul Whelan.
“I expect to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov in the next days. This will be my first meeting since the start of the war. I will raise a matter that is of paramount importance to us. Blinken stated Wednesday that Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, both Americans, must be released.
“We made a significant proposal weeks ago to facilitate their release. Both our governments have been communicating repeatedly and directly about that proposal. I will use the conversation to follow-up personally, and I hope we can reach a solution.”
