Progressives’ Crusade Against Crisis Pregnancy Centers Shows They Are Not Pro-Choice

Many left-leaning politicians have been exposed for their duplicity in their views on abortion after Roe v. Wade was overturned. Many abortion supporters refer to themselves as “pro-choice,” which means that they believe that mothers should be able to end their pregnancies at any time without interference from the government. One who fits this description might be opposed to abortion but not uncomfortable with the state banning it.

However, pro-choice supporters became pro-abortion somewhere along the line. You can see this in their current efforts to demonize pregnancy centers (PHCs), and other organizations that offer alternatives to abortion.

Crisis pregnancy centers have been a target of the left for decades. Over the years, progressives have published numerous reports and op-eds in which they accuse these organizations of using dishonest methods to trick mothers into keeping their kids.

Democrats have renewed their campaign against these organizations now that Roe V. Wade has been overturned. They hope to turn public opinion against them and spread false narratives about their operations. On social media, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D.MA) has circulated a video in which she decries crisis pregnancy centers and repeats the usual progressive talking points about the issue.

“In Massachusetts right now, those crisis pregnancy centers that are there to fool people who are looking for pregnancy termination…outnumber true abortion clinics by three to one. They must be shut down in Massachusetts and all across the country. It is not acceptable to torture pregnant women like this.”

Warren and Senator Ed Markey (D.MA) met last month to discuss legislation that would crack down on abortion centers. Warren stated during a press conference that these are deceptive outfits that are trying to harass and otherwise frighten pregnant women to prevent them from seeking an abortion. They do this under the pretext of offering abortion services.

Some lawmakers take a more extreme approach to legislation that targets pregnancy centers than the Democratic legislators. Pro-abortion activists started carrying out vandalism and firebombings against churches and pregnancy centers shortly after Dobbs’ draft opinion was published by the Supreme Court in May.

The Democrats’ strategy is obvious: Persuade the American public that all or most crisis pregnancy centers are engaging in unethical activities to persuade women not to have children. Leftists have so far not offered much evidence to support the claim that most of these centers operate in this manner. These organizations are mainly local non-profits but are required to disclose the nature and purpose of the services they provide.

We can see why pro-abortion supporters have promoted this narrative by looking at the numbers. This month, the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), published a report proving that crisis pregnancy centers have saved more than 800,000.

According to a press release, even more, life-affirming pregnancies help centers have “saved millions of lives” since they were established “over 50 years ago,” according to a press release. Even the Guttmacher Institute, which supports abortion, acknowledged that unintended pregnancies that ended in abortion have decreased from 50% to 34% between 2015 and 2019. Other pro-life organizations report saving hundreds of thousands of people through their services.

However, Sen. Warren and other progressives claim that they are pro-choice. So why would they be so against PHCs? Isn’t the mother ultimately responsible for deciding whether or not to terminate a pregnancy?

Even if a rogue crisis pregnancy center uses deceptive methods to lure mothers into an abortion, don’t they still have the right to make their choice? They could just leave if they don’t feel they can have their child aborted. These women are not reported to have been forced to give up their children by volunteers. If someone is truly pro-choice they would be open to women who choose not to end their pregnancies.

This is the core of the matter. Truth is, progressives support abortion as long as they are allowed to choose. These people are not happy with the idea that mothers might reconsider their decision to have an abortion. A normal outcome would be that PHCs are not available to them.

It is worth noting, however, that every mother who decides to have a child will generate less revenue for abortion companies like Planned Parenthood. Simply put, abortion centers reduce the profits of the abortion business, a large part of which are enthusiastic supporters of Democratic candidates. Planned Parenthood’s super PAC declared in 2019 that it would donate $45 million to pro-abortion candidates for the 2020 election. Simply put, pregnancy centers pose a threat to the revenue stream.

As Roe v. Wade has been a distant memory, it is likely that there will be more attacks on PHCs as more women seek their services. Progressives will do whatever it takes to protect abortion. Their efforts will not be limited to governmental action. They will also try to eliminate alternatives to abortion. These people have finally revealed their true goal, which has nothing whatsoever to do with choosing.
