Sportscaster Stephen Smith has been lighting up the Democrats over how they have been dealing with former President Donald Trump, and he’s blasting the lawfare that has been employed against him.

My colleague Bob Hoge reported on some of it already.

But Smith wasn’t done yet. He appeared on Sean Hannity’s show on Thursday.

Smith said he’d voted primarily for Democrats most of his life but that he was “disgusted” by what he was seeing in the pursuit of Trump.

They’ve clearly politicized this thing with Donald Trump because they can’t come up with a strategy to offset the momentum that he’s clearly gained. In at least five polls, he’s up. He’s up over Biden in at least five polls that I’ve counted. That’s the reality of the situation.

He said Democrats didn’t seem to have the “issues in their favor.”

You believe because of that you’re going to manipulate the system, best as you possibly can, to avoid him from possibly running for re-election again. That appears to be their strategy. But I’m here to tell you, it’s not working.

Smith seems to get how wrong this approach is. He’s not coming out for Trump; he is coming out for an unbiased contest and not targeting your competition.

You don’t blow up the system to get your political opponent and then cry about how you’re saving democracy — as you try to throw your opponent off the ballot so Americans can’t vote for him. People tend not to think you’re sincere when you try moves like that.

Hannity asked him about black voter movement to Trump, noting that if he holds onto any of the numbers the polls are suggesting, he’ll win.

Smith noted three things in response that he thought were bringing that movement.

First, people wanting “law and order.”

The streets don’t seem safe and people want safety. We can sit up there and lament law and order which is what Donald Trump used to verbalize but the fact is that the American people like law and order. We want our streets safe. We want to make sure that if you commit a crime you get to go to jail. You don’t sit up there and get arrested and go you’re out the same day. You don’t want to assault people and you’re out the same day, that’s number one.

Second, the economy.  He noted it means the same thing to everyone, including black voters.

When we talk about the economy were not talking about the state of affairs economically or even the job participation rate, we’re talking about the money that you keep in your pocket when you go to the gas station and it’s exorbitant prices and you go to the supermarket and milk and bread and cheese and this other stuff is exorbitantly high compared to what it once was — that is a red flag to a lot of folks because the money that you keep in your pocket is what tells you whether or not the economy is flourishing or not.

Exactly. So, Joe Biden can spin all he wants, but everyone knows that they have less in their pockets now under him than under Trump.

Smith also hit on a touchy subject: when Trump talked about black voters understanding discrimination.

He said these were all “contributing factors” to why Biden was slipping.

Right again. Trump wasn’t equating himself with what black people have gone through in this country. But he was noting that they can see the bias of the actions against him when it’s happening because they historically understand discrimination.

Democrats want to attack Trump and stop him because they can’t defend Biden’s record; they can’t stand on better policy. Americans are getting that, and that spells real trouble for the Democrats.
