U.S. Customs and Border Protection sent out disciplinary suggestions for border agents on horseback who were accused of “whipping” Haitian migrants in Texas last January. This event caused an uproar among Washington lawmakers.
Fox News reported that although details of the punishments are not yet available, CBP will soon announce the results from its administrative investigation.
Last year, the agency was falsely accused by agents of whipping migrants in Texas’ Del Rio Sector.
Twitter users shared images of agents trying to stop migrants entering the U.S. and, in one instance, grabbing the shirt of a migrant.
As some media outlets and Democratic lawmakers failed to correctly identify the split reins used by the agents to control the horse and direct it, the controversy escalated. They also falsely claimed that the agents were using whips on the migrants.
Vice President Kamala Harris, President Biden, also spoke out. Biden increased the pressure on besieged agents, repeating false claims of whipping. He also showed what he expected to be the end result of the investigation.
Biden made a whipping motion with one hand and stated that he was shocked to see people treated this way, with horses running over people, and people being strapped. I promise you that those people will be punished. An investigation is underway right now, and there will be consequences. There will be consequences.
The Office of Inspector General refused to press criminal charges against these agents, and the investigation moved to DHS’ Office of Professional Responsibility.
According to a source, the CBP will soon announce the results of the investigation.
